Coconut oil is well known to prevent bacteria because it contains medium chain fatty acids. These fatty acids have powerful antimicrobial effects that help to kill microorganisms. The most powerful antimicrobial agents are capric acid and lauric acid.

These two fatty acids are also found in human breast that protects babies from infections. When coconut oil is applied on skin, it prevents microbial infection.
